Metz, our new Sister City

Metz, our new Sister City

Date Published: Oct 29

On June 13, 2025, Kansas City, Missouri (KC) and Metz, France, formalised a new Sister City agreement—making Metz KC’s 13th international partner.
Here’s what this means — and why Metz makes such a great match.

Why this partnership matters

The agreement was signed by Mayor Quinton Lucas of Kansas City and Mayor François Grosdidier of Metz in Metz’s historic Hôtel de Ville, with a delegation from KC including students, educators and business-leaders present.
This Sister City link opens doors for cultural exchange, educational collaborations, business ties and deepening people-to-people connections between our region and the Lorraine/Grand Est region of France.

A short intro to Metz

Located in northeastern France at the confluence of the Moselle and Seille rivers, Metz is the prefecture of the Moselle department in the Grand Est region.
Here are a few highlights:

  • Metz’s history goes back to Gallic and Roman times (it was the capital of the Mediomatrici tribe).
  • Architecturally rich: the Gothic Cathedral of Saint‑Étienne (Metz) boasts one of the largest stained glass expanses in France; and the city blends medieval, imperial and modern quarters.
  • A city of culture and innovation: Metz is home to the Centre Pompidou‑Metz (a major branch of Paris’s Pompidou) and is noted as a “capital of urban ecology”.
  • Strategic location: just ~82 minutes by TGV from Paris, and close to Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg—making it a gateway in Europe.
