Unleashing the power of the bilingual brain

On February 23, 2024, Dr. Rola Mahmoud, a neurologist, delivered a captivating presentation on the profound effects of learning new languages on the brain — and its surprising benefits for our overall health and happiness.

She highlighted how language learning stimulates brain function through neuroplasticity, the brain’s remarkable ability to adapt and rewire itself. This cognitive workout doesn’t just sharpen the mind — it supports healthy aging and may even delay the onset of dementia.

This inspiring talk was presented as part of the global Night of Ideas and organized in partnership with the UMKC Department of World Languages and Cultures.
