AFKC Ciné‑Club: How It Works

Discover the richness of French and Francophone cinema with our monthly Ciné‑Club—where every film opens a window onto history, culture, and emotion.

How it works

Watch it at home
Each month, we select a quality French or Francophone film.
Watch it in advance—we select films available for free via Kanopy (with a library card)

Join the discussion
We meet at AFKC, to speak about the movie after a quick presentation giving the context of the movie.
Bring your insights, questions, and favorite moments.

Member-exclusive & free
These discussions are free and reserved for AFKC members. Not yet a member, join us (see link bellow)

Language & level
Discussions are in French—good French proficiency is recommended to make the most of the exchange

Why join?

Cultural immersion: Beyond entertainment, films connect us to French history, values, and creativity.

AFKC Ciné‑Club Retrospective

  • Gemma Bovery (2014)
A witty modern-day reimagining of Flaubert’s Madame Bovary
  • Le Comte de Monte‑Cristo
Our special session comparing Dumas’s classic with its modern adaptation.
  • Haute Cuisine (Les Saveurs du Palais)
Inspired by the true story of President Mitterrand’s personal chef
  • La Gloire de mon Père & Le Château de ma Mère
Nostalgic childhood memoirs by Marcel Pagnol, set in the hills of Provence.
  • Les Trois Mousquetaires – D’Artagnan (2023)
A new swashbuckling adaptation of Dumas’s tale of adventure and intrigue.
  • De Gaulle (2020)
A gripping portrayal of Charles de Gaulle during WWII and the founding moment of Free France.
  • Far from Men (2014)
This adaptation of Albert Camus’ short story “The Guest” offers a gripping, existential tale—part Western, part political drama—and delivers a poignant exploration of choice, morality, and compassion.
  • The President's Wife / Bernadette (2023)
Starring the legendary Catherine Deneuve. The film shines a humorous spotlight on Bernadette Chirac, the First Lady of France, often overlooked in the shadow of her husband, President Jacques Chirac.
  • The Guardians (2017)
Set during World War I, The Guardians tells the moving story of women left behind to tend the land while the men are at the front. Staring Nathalie Baye and her daughter Laura Smet.
  • Cezanne et moi (2017)
A richly emotional biographical drama that traces the turbulent lifelong friendship between painter Paul Cézanne and writer Émile Zola, exploring how art, ambition, and loyalty shaped—and strained—the bond between two creative giants.
  • Ensemble c'est tout (Book & Ciné Club)
A tender story about four unlikely roommates in Paris who gradually heal one another’s loneliness and learn the meaning of friendship and chosen family.
  • Private Life (2026) A special Ciné Club at the Glenwood Arts Theater
A heartfelt and often humorous portrait of a couple navigating the emotional and physical challenges of infertility and their long journey toward parenthood.
