Strengthen your language skills while exploring the richness of French history, arts, and society in this 10-session course with Jean Louis Bruyère.

This course is designed for intermediate learners who want to improve their French while diving into the richness of French culture. Each week, you will explore a major theme in French history, society, and arts—all while practicing speaking, listening, and reading skills in a supportive environment.

The class is not conducted entirely in French, making it an excellent opportunity for those at a A2 level and above to gain confidence while engaging with cultural content.

Through history, literature, arts, society, and more, you will expand your vocabulary, sharpen your comprehension, and strengthen your ability to communicate with confidence.

Course Highlights 

Each week explores a new facet of French culture:

1. Lesson 1: The History of France – From the Origins to the Revolution
   Foundational periods: Roman Gaul, the Capetian monarchy, the Renaissance, the Ancien Régime, and the revolutionary shift.
2. Lesson 2: Modern and Contemporary France
   From the French Revolution to today: Empire, Republic, world wars, European integration, and current challenges.
3. Lesson 3: French Literature, Classical and Modern
   A panorama of great authors and movements: from classicism (Molière, Racine) to the 20th century (Proust, Camus, Sartre).
4. Lesson 4: French Arts – Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture
   From Gothic art to contemporary creation: castles, Impressionism, avant-garde movements, and architectural heritage.
5. Lesson 5: The French Language and the Francophonie
   The evolution of the language, regional particularities, language policy, and the international influence of French.
6. Lesson 6: French Institutions and Political Life
   The political system, the Constitution of the Fifth Republic, territorial organization, and major democratic debates.
7. Lesson 7: French Society – Traditions and Evolutions
   Lifestyles, values, secularism, education, social protection, and contemporary societal transformations.
8. Lesson 8: The French Economy and Territories
   Economic geography, centers of excellence, territorial planning, and France’s place in globalization.
9. Lesson 9: Science and Innovation – The French Spirit
   Major scientific discoveries, famous inventors, contemporary research, and French intellectual influence.
10. Lesson 10: France in the World
    Diplomacy, international cooperation, cultural influence, and the geopolitical challenges of the 21st century.
