About our Group French Classes


Class Levels

Classes are structured into one of five levels:

  • A1 (Beginner),
  • A2 (Elementary),
  • B1 (Intermediate),
  • B2 (Upper intermediate),
  • C1 (Advanced),
  • C2 (Expert).

These levels correspond to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), an international standard for describing language proficiency. 


Tuition & Enrollment

Adult classes are arranged in 10-week terms. Classes meet once a week for two hours and cost $350 ($17.50 per hour of instruction).

We have a total of four terms in a calendar year. Classes are offered mostly in the evening from 6:00 to 8:00pm, sometime on Saturday mornings.


Membership & Textbook

In addition to tuition, an annual membership is required.

Memberships are $40 for an individual or $55 for a family. Membership for students currently enrolled in a local university, is only $20.

You will need a textbook. The name textbook can be found in the details of each class. You can then refer to the Textbook Guide for the ISBN and links to purchase the book.

Classes are offered throughout the year in 4 terms, each consisting of 10 sessions.

A1.1 - Beginner's French

This introductory class is intended for students with no prior experience in French. It is the first of 3 levels at the A1 beginner level.

History Culture Linguistics

Introduction to French Phonetics

History Culture Linguistics

This class is taught by Dr. Lindsy Myers, Adjunct Instructor at UMKC. 
Dr. Myers earned her PhD in French Linguistics from the University of Texas.

Course Highlights 


Session 1: Prosody
 (rhythm, stress, intonation) and the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). 

Guiding questions: How are English and French sounds organized differently in speech? Why are individual words difficult to pick out in extended speech in French? What are the primary melodies and stress patterns in French? How can we practice these sound patterns?

Session 2: Oral vowels

Guiding questions: What are the major differences between French and English vowels? What are the graphemes associated with each vowel sound? What are the most important and meaningful distinctions between French vowels? How can we practice hearing and articulating these sounds?

Session 3: Nasal vowels and semivowels (glides)

Guiding questions: How do we identify and use nasal vowels and semivowels in French? How are they meaningfully distinct from oral vowels? How can we practice hearing and articulating these sounds? What type of variation is observed in the pronunciation of vowels throughout the francophone world?

Session 4: Consonants

Guiding questions: What are the major differences between French and English consonants? What are the graphemes associated with each consonant sound? How can we practice hearing and articulating these sounds? What type of variation is observed in the pronunciation of consonants throughout the francophone world?
