Learning French in one’s home country allows students to gradually build their language skills, expand their vocabulary, understand
grammar rules, and develop their communication abilities. A French language immersion program in France complements this learning journey
by giving students the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice in an authentic French-speaking environment. It is with this goal
in mind that our students from the Alliance Française of Kansas City were welcomed at the Alliance
Française of Lyon for a 10-day French immersion stay with host families.
This experience at the heart of Lyon’s daily life allowed them to practice French every day, interact with native speakers, and discover a
new way of learning: by living the language rather than only studying it.
Staying with a host family is an essential part of a
French immersion program. By sharing the daily life of a Lyon family, students discovered French as it is truly spoken in everyday
situations. Conversations during meals, spontaneous discussions, and moments shared with their host families provided valuable
opportunities to improve listening comprehension and learn authentic expressions. This close connection with native speakers also helped
students better understand French cultural habits and the different ways people communicate.
A language immersion experience becomes even more meaningful when students can explore a cultural environment that gives context and
meaning to the language they are learning. In Lyon, our students had the opportunity to take part in experiences that are only possible on
site, such as a guided tour of the famous traboules or a discovery of the Beaujolais region. These moments were not simply sightseeing
activities: they became true learning opportunities. Being accompanied by a guide, interacting with local residents, and discovering
regional heritage allowed students to develop specific vocabulary related to history, architecture, gastronomy, and French traditions.
These new words became much more meaningful because they were connected to real-life experiences. It is this connection between language
and culture that makes learning richer and more memorable.
Another major benefit of a French language immersion program in France is the opportunity to communicate with other learners from
different backgrounds. Speaking French with students from other countries is an excellent exercise in adaptation. Learners are exposed to
different accents, different speaking rhythms, and different ways of using the language. They learn to listen more carefully, rephrase
their ideas, and adjust their communication in order to be understood. This diversity of interactions prepares students to use French in
an international context, with speakers from a wide variety of backgrounds.
A French immersion program in France does not replace the learning journey students follow in their home country: it complements it and gives it greater depth. In just a few days, our students developed new language reflexes, gained confidence, and built a more natural relationship with the French language. The stay of the Alliance Française of Kansas City students at the Alliance Française of Lyon perfectly illustrates the benefits of linguistic immersion: learning French in a different way, through authentic exchanges, cultural discoveries, and meaningful life experiences that remain long after returning home.
The French classes and the time with the host family were amazing. Having Isabelle’s deep understanding of the area and her enormous patience with us was also a game changer. That trip was planned meticulously, and as a result it was WONDERFUL!
Overall, things were awesome and I’d do it again. I told Isabelle she can sign me up for the next trip no matter where it was....
I went to Lyon fairly confident when I spoke. As the trip progressed and more and more of the locals spoke to me in French instead of switching to English, I think that really helped my confidence.
This was the first immersion trip I have taken. I truly had a wonderful time on this trip. I feel that I have a better understanding of the concept of an immersion trip and I know that I'll be more eager and confident in participating in speaking French with others on my next immersion trip to a different city.
We’re heading to Aix-en-Provence in partnership with Alliance Française Aix-Marseille Provence for another unforgettable French language and cultural experience.
